The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is encouraging aspiring hunters to get certified before the start of fall hunting season by offering hunter education courses across the Commonwealth in celebration of Hunter Education Day on August 1.

The annual observance highlights the importance of hunter safety and responsible outdoor recreation while providing new hunters with an opportunity to complete the training required to legally hunt in Kentucky.

State law requires anyone 12 years of age or older to successfully complete a hunter education course before purchasing a hunting license and participating in the state’s hunting seasons.

The one-time certification course is designed to teach safe firearm handling, hunting ethics, wildlife conservation, and best practices for responsible hunting. Students learn essential skills that help ensure a safe experience for themselves and others in the field.

Courses are available both online and in person. Those who choose the online option must also attend and successfully complete an in-person range day, where they demonstrate safe firearm handling and practical hunting skills before receiving certification.
